Many cities across the U.S. are canceling Columbus Day in exchange for Indigenous People's Day. The motive behind this move is that much of what we are taught about Columbus is inaccurate and masks the horrible actions of Columbus towards the native populations of the lands he "discovered". Seattle is amongst the first cities to adopt this change in name.
"Columbus' history is soaked in the blood of the Natives he massacred and exploited. "
Columbus was on a search for gold and land. He was willing to resort to any sort of violence and exploitation to gain this power and wealth. He permitted the rape of Native women and enslaved many of the Indigenous as well. Columbus' history is soaked in the blood of the Natives he massacred and exploited.
Historically speaking he was not the first European to even visit the area, that was Leif Ericson.
He is also often attributed with discovering that the Earth is round yet this is also false because this fact was discovered 2,000 years prior to his existence.
We, at World Wide Women Now support the canceling of Columbus Day so that we may instead honor the Indigenous whose ancestors and relatives suffered at the hand of European imperialism and colonization.
