"We need more Muslim women and women of color like her visible in the media..."
In recent weeks the world has been fixated on Amal Alamuddin, but not for the right reasons. Alamuddin captured the spotlight last year when she was seen with George Clooney, an American actor. The media became a frenzy of who she was and how she captured the attention of Hollywood's famous bachelor. Ignoring Alamuddin's background, the media gave precedence to her style and relationship with Clooney, glossing over her impressive career. Her resume is envy worthy with a position as Barrister and a specialization in criminal and human rights law. She has also turned down a seat on a UN committee due to human rights violations against the people of Gaza.
Although we adore her fashion sensibility and the fact that she is marrying George Clooney is great, her career completely overshadows both. Instead of reporting 'how she got' George Clooney, we think the media should instead highlight how she rose in such a competitive field.
She is highly educated, accomplished, and outspoken, not limiting herself in career and life. We need more Muslim women and women of color like her visible in the media (Alamuddin is of the Druze sect). The media needs to highlight their accomplishments not just their looks, style, or significant others. She's more than that, we're more than that, and the media should do a better job at reporting on women of color.
