"I don't want to be somewhere where I am tolerated, I want to be somewhere I am celebrated." - Imaan

"The most radical thing any woman; woman of color, bisexual woman, lesbian woman, trans woman, immigrant woman, older woman, sick woman, disabled woman, Muslim woman can do is to love herself. For her to find herself beautiful, intelligent, worthy and empowered against all odds in a society that does not see her as such, is to fight against the system in a big way. For her to take care of her physical and emotional health through self love is a form of resistance. For her to write about her experiences when her voice is often overlooked or deemed unimportant is for her to be brave. This bravery sends the ultimate message that I refuse to hate myself and I am important. I love me. - Imaan Today's thoughts: Cultural Relativism within the Muslim community and outside of the Muslim community. When someone asks, "Why you do not wear a hijab even though you identify as Muslim." Firstly, I respect women who choose to wear the hijab and women who choose not to equally. Secondly, hijab has never been a common occurrence in Pakistan, at least when I was growing up there. The huge increase in women wearing hijab in Pakistan is still a relatively recent development and in no way is it a bad thing, more power to those women. I think the concept and spirituality behind the hijab is beautiful . I am just trying to make the point that majority of women in my family do not wear it and it has nothing to do with their religious choice not to, it's just not something that was very common in Pakistan. Muslim countries are diverse and people within the Muslim community and outside of it need to acknowledge that. We have to be careful not to view Islam just through one or two cultural lenses. Let's try not to judge one another, thanks. And yes I get this question from Muslims and non Muslims alike." - Imaan If you are an avid follower of celebrity news and gossip like I am then you will have already heard that Chris Hemsworth is People Magazine's Sexiest Man Alive 2014. Which is great and all, I mean he does play a norse god so that counts for something ( even if it is for Marvel and not DC, boo) . I am also a big fan of the pictures of him with his baby girl, it's like seeing Horton Hears A Who in person. A giant dude carrying this little person and trying not to crush it, it's really very endearing . "...for the past eighteen years, Sexiest Man Alive has consistently been a stereotypically handsome white man. " Don't get me wrong he's a great looking guy and he seems to be doing well for himself, but it just wasn't a very bold choice. The choice was very predictable in fact because for the past eighteen years the title of Sexiest Man Alive has consistently been given to a stereotypically handsome white man. We talk a lot about women's magazines focusing on Euro-centric looks but we tend to forget that men can also be victims of these impossible beauty standards. At least Denzel Washington made the cut......in 1996. One group of men that are noticeably underrepresented in magazines and television are Asian men. In fact there are many studies that show that Asian men are represented as less masculine in Western media and often do not get the leading roles (men of color generally don't) . I think John Cho from Harold and Kumar and Leonardo Nam from Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants are proof that we are missing out on some eye candy here. This post wasn't meant to objectify men, I promise. Anyway the point is that this is very unfair and needs to change. People Magazine has a diversity problem and we're calling them out. Do not fret we have done our research and we at World Wide Women have selected our own Sexiest Man Alive 2014. The sexiest man 2014 is......... JASON MOMOA R EASONS WHY WE LOVE HIMA. He is married to Lisa Bonnet who basically would have been everyone's WCW if instagram existed in the 80s. Seriously google their pictures together, it's unreal. B. He is the step father to Zoe Kravitz, daughter of Lenny Kravitz and Lisa Bonet. You could say they're a pretty rock n roll family. C. Rumour has it that he is thinking of starting a beer brewing company in Detroit and we love anyone who is a patron of Detroit. Please oh please let this be true. D. He is the Khal Drogo to our Khaleesi. Self explanatory. E. Another rumor circulating around the D.C. comic geekdom (which I am proud to be a part of) is that he will be playing Aquaman. Uhhh yes please? honorable mentions: |
